Nadine Gillam
Born in the south of the UK, I was raised reading books that were fun to read and had a unique style of writing. My favourite books were often written in a poetry style and had a sense of humour.
After moving to Hong Kong with my family at a young age, I also experienced schooling with that famous Hong Kong strict education style. Learning Cantonese, Mandarin and Indonesian helped me see what challenges there are in learning a language. Along with seeing my Chinese classmates having trouble learning English and later becoming an English teacher myself, I came to see that when learning comes across as boring, children (and adults) progress a lot slower.
I wanted to design a book series that children could enjoy and have fun with - hence the poetry - but also learn, even subconsciously. I also wanted the books to be easy to follow along with for parents who may also be learning English and want to help their children at home.
With over 10 years experience in teaching Hong Kong students, and designing a 3-level phonics course, I have found that for children to progress and learn, they need books like these - fun, educational and perfect for parent-child time.
About the Illustrator
Rachel Chan
I was born and raised in Hong Kong with a Chinese father and Filipina mother. Because of my passion for art since a young age, I decided to study design at the Hong Kong design institute.
Since then, I have had experience working in playgroup and nursery, giving me experience with working with young children and seeing their interest spark and eyes light up when they see brightly coloured pictures in books. With the art work in these books, I hope to bring enjoyment to the children who read them.
