Our Favourite Book Genres For Kids Starting Their Reading Journey

When kids are starting their reading journey, bringing out a range of genres is a great way to help kids expand their vocabulary, learn about the world, expand their imagination and help them find their passion.

Here we've got a list of our favourite genres for little ones starting to read to get you started - recommendations included!

1. Fairy Tales

According to Einstein, fairy tales are the key to a smart child! Fairy tales are usually the first book genre we read with our kids. It's an obvious choice as they are sweet, funny and are great for little ones with big imaginations.

2. Letter & Phonics Books

Books teaching letters & phonics are great for teaching kids how to read. As they improve in their reading skills, they'll automatically love reading even more! They'll find it easier to read other books themselves and read more than ever!

Learning letters, letter sounds and even numbers through adorably illustrated books are a great way to make learning fun! Here are some of our top picks:

3. Animal Books

Animal & nature books are a brilliant way to get to know the world around us. I mean, what kid doesn't like animals?

Learning about cute fluffy rabbits or super strong alligators is a great way for kids to develop their interest in books and pick up more vocabulary along the way. Factual books about animals also teach kids descriptive language - a different style of writing to your typical children's books.

4. Rhyming Books

Rhyming stories are not only so fun to read, but they are also a good way for kids to learn 'word families'. 'Word families' are words that are spelt almost the same, usually with only 1 letter change, for example, cat & hat. Using this example, once a child learns how to sound out 'at', they can read many words such as cat, hat, bat, fat, rat, etc.

Learning through word families has been proven to speed up a child's learning progress considerably. Check out some of these rhyming stories to get you started:

Did you know? All of I-Tots Books are written in rhyme for this very reason! Check out our latest books on our homepage!

5. Geography Books

Geography books for kids usually include amazing pictures of places all over the world. This is great not only for exposing children to the world outside of their country and cultural differences, but also a whole new style of writing.

Talking about different places, people and cultures includes vocabulary and sentence structures that young children may not be exposed to until they get to school. Reading these books together earlier will open their minds to new places, ways of thinking and ways of expressing themselves.

Here are our top picks for geography books:
